What does SPC stand for?

SPC is short for Stone Plastic Composite, sometimes labelled Stone Polymer Composite by different manufacturers — both names refer to the same product. The name describes the core of the plank: a dense mixture of natural limestone powder (calcium carbonate) blended with PVC and stabilisers, compressed into a rigid sheet under high pressure.

This composition is what separates SPC from ordinary vinyl — the heavy limestone content makes the core dense, rigid and completely waterproof, since it contains no organic material that could absorb moisture or rot.

The layer structure of an SPC plank

A typical SPC plank is built from five layers, from top to bottom:

• UV / wear layer — a clear, tough top coating that resists scratches, stains and fading from sunlight
• Decorative layer — a high-definition printed film that creates the wood, stone or abstract design you see
• SPC rigid core — the limestone-PVC composite that gives the plank its strength, stability and click-lock profile
• Attached underlay — a foam or cork pad on the underside providing cushioning, sound absorption and minor thermal insulation

Overall plank thickness typically ranges from 3.5mm to 8mm, with 5–6.5mm being the most common range sold in Malaysia. Wear layer thickness matters most for durability — look for at least 0.3mm (called 12 mil) for light residential use, and 0.5mm (20 mil) or above for busy households or commercial spaces.

• Dimensionally stable — unlike solid timber, SPC does not expand or contract meaningfully with temperature and humidity changes

• Realistic appearance — modern high-definition printing produces convincing wood grain, knots and colour variation
• Straightforward installation — click-lock planks install as a floating floor, without glue, over most existing hard surfaces
