You want to keep floor height as close as possible to the original level (important if door swings or built-ins are tight)
You're doing a full renovation anyway and want a clean slate for waterproofing before relaying

If you hear hollow or drum-like sounds in multiple spots, or can visibly see unevenness, budget for removal instead — an overlay on a compromised base will only shorten the new flooring's lifespan and risk cracking over time.
